RESIDENCY: Bodner, a Chambersburg native and former Trojan harrier, currently resides in State College, the town of his alma mater, Penn State University. Bodner's family still lives in Chambersburg, as do many of his friends and running companions, and he often returns to the area to visit, train, and compete in local races.
STROKE OF LUCK: After a solid 31-minute performance at this past summer's Ausherman 5-Miler, Bodner stood around the award ceremony, drinking beer and talking about how much fun he was going to have in Bermuda, confident that he would beat the odds and be randomly chosen for the raffled, expense-paid trip. The first name drawn out of the hat was not him, but since the winner was not there to accept the prize, another name was drawn, and it was Bodner. With both fists pumping in the air, he strutted up to the front of the crowd to claim his self-predicted prize. Bodner just recently returned from the trip and gave it rave reviews. Despite uncharacteristically cold weather, he loved the whole experience and described it as a first class vacation. Bodner competed in the Bermuda International 10k while on the island, and despite rain, hail, and heavy winds on the hilly course, he finished in 41 minutes and 40th overall out of over 300 runners and was the sixth American to cross the finish line.
IN THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE: After hopefully breaking 90 minutes in both the Colonial Williamsburg Half Marathon and Chambersburg Half Marathon this spring, Bodner will travel to California in April to compete in the Big Sur Marathon, which will be his first stab at this distance. His main goal is just to finish, although he would like to do it in under 3:30.
ANDREW'S COMMENTS: Like his favorite musician, Bruce Springsteen, Bodner was "born to run." After a stellar high school cross country career, in which he helped lead the Trojans to their last Mid Penn title in 1989, Bodner took an extended hiatus from running, mostly due to a schedule and lifestyle that didn't permit the time or energy to train. A musician himself, Bodner spent six years playing rhythm guitar and keyboards for the modern rock band The Dirges. As a professional rocker, Bodner was constantly on the road, often performing up to five times weekly in clubs and on college campuses around the country. He even got to share the stage at times with famous national acts, such as The Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan. After the band broke up in 1997, Bodner cut his hair, shaved his goatee, and traded in his guitar for a briefcase. With this new, more conventional, businessman lifestyle, Bodner was finally able to wipe the dust off his running shoes and start hitting the roads and trails again. In his first race back, the '98 Newport Moose Turkey Trot 10k, Bodner struggled to finish in 48 minutes. But one year later at the '99 Turkey Trot, with many more races and miles under his belt, he cruised the same course in 38 minutes to place second in his age group. There's no doubt that Bodner's times will continue to drop, as his enthusiasm continues to grow.
